I love cheddar. I am also half Welsh. Whilst this had no impact on my choosing this cheese to review, I note that our site has a distinct lack of cheeses from this particular corner of the world. There is certainly no shortage in this area, including a few with particularly wonderful Welsh names like “Y Cwt Caws” or “Rhyd y Delyn” (good luck getting your mouth around those…). This particular offering comes from my staple supermarket Lidl which makes this particular Welsh cheese accessible to the masses.

Opening the packet reveals a rich yellow Cheddar with a subtle yet inviting aroma (the exact smell I can’t quite put my finger on – a little sweet with the faintest hint of an almost smoky edge). The first thing to leap out from the taste buds is a gloriously earthy flavour that packs a decent punch. The texture is wonderful balance of smooth creamy goodness with a subtle crumbly edge. The cheese is a real treat to work around the mouth which, when done, brings out the best of the flavour. The packet describes the taste as robust and I have to agree. The taste is strong without being overpowering and it delivers satisfaction from start to finish.

I dont know what they are feeding the cows in Wales but it certainly makes for a great cheddar. The taste is noticeably distinct from any of the cheddars I have tried recently which is in itself worthy of note. With so many offerings it can be hard to stand out but this little beauty really made an impression. I am really struggling to find anything not to like. OK, it’s perhaps not the strongest Extra Mature but the taste more than compensates. As always, Lidl allows for superb value so there is no excuse not to load up your sandwich.

RATING – 9.0

MY RECOMMENDATION – If eaten alone, really work the cheese around the mouth to get the full benefit of the superb rich earthy flavour!

I’m delighted to find a kindred spirit, Louis! I too enjoyed this Cheddar, and it’s good value for money.
If you’re looking for a cheese that’s stronger – and you might not approve of my saying this unless the other half of you is from Scotland! – I recommend Lidl’s Caledonian Vintage Cheddar. It comes with a little more punch than the Welsh Extra Mature Cheddar.
    Regards,
    Stephen.

Hi Stephen. Kindred indeed! I am a great fan of the Caledonian Vintage as well. In fact, the tri-nations collection from Lidl offers great value and quality all around. The Red Fox is also a real favourite of mine.

That is a shame! We live in the South West and have both the Welsh and Scottish cheddar options available. Might be worth contacting Lidl to ask!

This is my favourite out of the 3 regional speciality cheeses Lidl currently offer; I find Caledonian too strong and am not a fan of Redstone as it’s waxy and orange.

    This one is lovely!
