I am generally a cheese traditionalist – I enjoy my cheese either as part of a cheese board with crackers and other accompaniments, or with a meal such as pasta. However, GrateMyCheese has led me outside of my comfort zone to review a ‘snacking cheese’.

The snack comes in a little bag like a packet of crisps and takes the shape of little discs of cooked cheese. The texture is excellent and reminded me of the burnt bits around the edge of a well-done pizza. The snacks are also not oily to the touch and easy to eat without getting your hands messy.

However, I didn’t get on so well with the flavour. There is a hint of the cooked cheese taste I was expecting, but rather than the cheddar taste I know and love, this Quattrocento cheese has a strong tangy flavour. This overpowers the other flavours and is initially very disappointing, but gets subsequently worse throughout the pack, as the flavour builds up to a bilious conclusion.

I first tried the original flavour, and then tried the rosemary pack, which tasted worse! The rosemary flavour clashes strongly with the overpowering tang and was not enjoyable in the least.

I expect that these snacks will be enjoyable to some, but they’re definitely not for me and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.

It looked promising with the comparison to the crispy pizza cheese but you lost me at bilious! Pretty pricey as well. I’d sooner cut a chunk off a block and nibble on that. Thank you for taking the taste hit on our behalf!
