At every cheese night we seek to find at least one item that pushes the boundaries of what it means to be a cheese. At the time of writing, of the various candidates submitted, this cheese lies furthest from my comfort zone.

First of all it is important to establish that this is not a cheese in the traditional sense. If someone were to give me this product unlabelled and ask me what it was, I would not even mention the word cheese; I would instead mention the words ‘fish sausage’. However, the creators have decided that it is a cheese, and Alex brought it to Cheese Meet 2019, so I thought I would write a review.

The main ingredient in this ‘cheese’ is fish, and that is how I would have described it. It is somewhat similar to seafood sticks, but with slightly less flavour and a more spongy texture. The colour scheme is very egg-like; the stick is predominantly white and contains pea-sized yellow chunks which seem to be mostly cube-like in shape.

I could not identify which fish this ‘cheese’ tasted most like, nor do the ingredients (which are written in Japanese) specify from which fish it is made.

This ‘cheese’ is best served chopped in a spicy instant noodle for some added texture and to hide the flavour. I recommend including it with frankfurters and seaweed sheets.

As a cheese I would predictably rate this cheese as 0/10. However, this is not because it is without merit. Unfortunately I also do not particularly like processed fish, so I shan’t be trying it again in a hurry.
