Cheddar with Caramelised Onion (Seriously Spreadable)
Seriously Strong is a name I had not seen in a while. Fans of cheddar will no doubt have seen one of their wide range of products on a supermarket shelf recently – probably more recently at least than I did! This particular offering caught my eye on a recent shopping trip. I have long been a fan of Caramelised Onion as a flavouring so this caught my eye. At just 99p a tub, it makes for an excellent budget fridge-filler for those quick turnaround sandwiches – assuming its actually any good. Described as smooth and mellow, how does it stack up?
Initial thoughts are that the cheese looks very smooth (and so it should for a spreadable cheese). The smell of onion is not overwhelming and the cheddar has a sufficiently yellow tinge to make you think it is not just a cheap basic cheddar. In fact, the Seriously Cheddar brand prides itself on the quality of its Scottish-based Cheddar. Dipping in a biscuit shows just how smooth it is, even straight out of the fridge. The taste of onion is, in my opinion, perfectly pitched – not to strong, nicely sweet and suitable present. The taste also lingers nicely without being overwhelming. The base cheddar certainly holds up and it more than just a method for getting the taste of onion in to your lunch.
I was suitably impressed with this cheese. All too often, a spreadable cheese settles for a sub-par cheese as a base. This offering has the provenance of a reputable cheesemaking company behind it and it certainly shows. Sure, its not going to rock your world but it does exactly what is says on the tin/tub. If Caramelised Onion is your thing, look out for this on your next shopping trip. You can thank me later.
RATING – 8.5
RECOMMENDATION – This cheese is designed for spreading to go forth and spread! The smooth consistency would also lend itself to melting in to your cooking for a bit of extra oomph

Consummate copious consumer of cheese. Lover of a good strong cheddar!
I do like these cheese spreads, very moreish.
Do note that is made in France, not Scotland. Whilst the cheddar may be from the UK (marked in big print) all the other ingredients which go into the product (there are a few!) and the production is conducted in France. This is marked in small print on the pack. Alas food miles 🙁
